Inside Your Living Spaces

Feeling lost when you start drafting your shopping list? We’ve eased the way for you. Follow our fast-track directions and action plan.

  1. Which is the atmosphere you wish to set? Make up your colour scheme first. Choose from our Fan Deck & Colour Cards or from the trendy selection of our Colourvogue guide. Colour mixing and matching has its rules—you’ll become quite an expert at it if you pay a quick visit to our chapter dedicated to Colour Combinations. It’s a crash course in itself.
  2. Next, go through the 3 determining criteria to establish a complete and, foremost, a relevant list of what you need: surface type, ambient conditions and desired finishing.
  3. Major surface types are: cement (walls and ceilings, floors, work tops), wood (furniture and flooring) and metal (infrastructures and furniture).
  4. Ambient conditions include prevailing climate and conditions locally prevailing inside your living spaces themselves. For exemple: cooking heat and vapours in the kitchen; exposure to water and humidity in the bathroom.
  5. Finishing is chosen on the basis of desired or required brilliance level: matt, satin or brilliant; or else you can also play with texture.

Living & Dining

Today living and dining rooms are most often one. This space increasingly extends to an integrated kitchen. Socio-economic and cultural evolutions have significantly reduced residential surface areas. In their wake, socialising at home has become restricted to the occupants’ inner circles. Formality has given way to conviviality, bringing down walls. This however creates the need to structure these open spaces otherwise and also to optimize the use of space. Furniture plays a major role in delimiting physical space with regards to functions. Paint significantly contributes to visual structuring. Consequently, choice of colours, degrees of brilliance and texture are all-important to set atmospheres, for accentuation, to dynamise and express the personality of that all-inclusive space.

Matt, smooth, silky, shiny—these are various degrees of brilliance to choose from our acrylic emulsions. You can also mix different finishing effectively to create attractive contrasts. Mauvacryl is perfectly matt and is very helpful to hide imperfections and irregularities with no less bright colours. Mauvitop is a chic sleek matt with 15% brilliance; it produces a smooth feel and speaks of sober elegance. Cashmere presents 25% brilliance and a subdued sheen which sets an intimate ambience and diffuses an all-enveloping warmth for a cosy cocoon feel. VIP Satin is formulated at 50% brilliance. It is a sheer revelator of light by day or by night. This coating includes the significant advantage of being highly washable particularly if your living space is the multifunctional room of the house—that one where the preferred relaxation area is the settee, which serves as reading, TV, homework and playroom for the kids as well as its primary function of being the guest reception area. The living and dining area is also the perfect backdrop to exploit the decorative potential of our wonderful Textured Paints. Their finishing touch is totally out of the ordinary. You can be daring with these!

Kitchen

The kitchen is that part of the house which has known the most transformations over time both as concerns its functions and technological evolutions. It is the living space which presents the highest rate of equipment. The kitchen has indeed wholly turned into a living space—it is everybody’s place and that which has evolved into the dining room too. Whether it is still walled off or is an open kitchen-dining room; whether it’s a three in-one: kitchen-living-dining or four in-one including the TV room, the kitchen is the axis around which life revolves. It is the nervous centre, the heart setting the pace, the time-keeper. Its interior architecture and decoration focus increasing attention and its values extend beyond functionality to embrace aesthetic and emotional values. This room now expresses not only lifestyle but also a whole new art of living.

As concerns the choice of paint coating, we would recommend our two highly washable acrylic emulsions: VIP Satin and Cashmere. They offer a choice of 2 more or less brilliant finishing—satin or silky. If you would prefer a matt but however washable finish, the best choice then is Mauvitop. It is a superior pure acrylic formula with a discreet sheen. The topmost choice for the kitchen would be one of our high-tech paints: Wallsafe or Nanotech Antibacterial—they present extraordinary sanitizing capacities.

Bedroom

Bedrooms rhyme with peace and intimacy; this dictates a suitable decor to conjure it up. This is the room where you reconnect with yourself, where you restore yourself. It is therefore most important to take great care in the choice of its colour scheme and finishing. These have a direct bearing on the ambiance and mood it weaves. A bedroom is a sensitive room—you therefore need to choose thoughtfully.

First check out the following sections: Fan Deck & Colour Cards and Colour Therapy. These are loaded with precious information on the symbolical values of colours, how they relate to personality traits as well as their physical and psychological effects. This will enable you to choose the most suitable colour scheme for your bedrooms. And if you want to go by trends, the Colour Vogue section showcases the latest.

In terms of paint finishing, better steer clear of brilliant coatings—bedrooms prefer a mat or powdery finish, to set a soft ambience. We recommend the following: 100% matt Mauvacryl; Mauvitop, with 15% gloss level, will set a powder coated effect and a relaxing ambience. Moreover it presents a high resistance to humidity. Cashmere's subdued shine creates an intimate feel and sensual ambience. If you want to enhance sanitary levels, go for Wallsafe and Nanotech Antibacterial—they present extraordinary sanitising capacities.

Bathroom

Water vapour, condensation, direct exposure to water and humidity and subsequent fungus—these are the daily risks to which is exposed your bathroom paint. The most exposed are obviously those areas directly exposed to splashing, i.e. the walls closest to the shower cubicle, bath tub and wash basin. One must therefore choose decorative paints that offer the most resistance—either waterproof, including fungicidal components and washable. Moreover, it is also important to ensure that the best possible hygienic conditions are ensured here.

Proflon's waterproof quality comes second to none. This is a paint of superior quality which also presents an extraordinary self-cleaning capacity as it simply streams away dust. The most practical choice remains VIP Satin—it offers excellent impermeability coupled with highly washable qualities. Its brilliance makes it the best choice to light up the bathroom space which is generally fitted with least openings. If fungus growth is rampant, you had better go for Antifungus. Your bathroom is spacious? Then you can vary coatings for the walls that are the less exposed to humidity. In that case you can play on different degrees of brilliance and use the elegantly matt Mauvitop for nice contrasts. If you want to enhance sanitary levels, go for Wallsafe and Nanotech Antibacterial—they present extraordinary sanitising capacities.

Colour Combinations

Whatever your wish for the decor of your living spaces, be it warm and welcoming, daring, trendy or sober—our colours are at your command.

However, choosing colours is not enough to ascertain an aesthetic result. You should also take into account how best they mix and match, which ones contrast or complement one another effectively. The right colour combination is as important as the right colour choice. There are several ways of going about colour combination. For example, from your main colour, you can derive an assortment of gradients that will ensure an elegant overall harmony. You can also go for complementary colours which will enhance one another or else, have your pick of visually stimulating contrasting colours. When you plan your colour combination, be daring! You can play with gradients of different colours. For example, choose 3 colours. For the first colour, select a light gradient; for the second go for a mid-tone and for the third choose a stronger gradient. This will altogether create balance and also structure volume effectively and beautifully.

Mauvilac Industries, Combinaison des Couleurs

Dominant Colour
The dominant colour sets the mood of the room and is that one which will make up 50% of the overall space, ideally.

Enhancing Colour
This can be on a wall panel, in the colour of the curtains or even on the floor and is chosen from the same nuance as the dominant colour to enhance it. It should occupy 25% of the overall space.

Accent Colours
Accent colours are best left to accessories as they bring in visual diversity and focal points: flower pots, cushions, wall pictures, to name just a few. They are streaks of either contrasting colours or echoes of the dominant colour. The best is to compose about 25% of overall space from these colours.

Hering's Colour Wheel

Hering’s colour wheel, is used and acknowledged across the world as the best colour combination system. Hering’s colour wheel includes a fourth primary colour, yellow, in addition to the three which the human eye identifies as independent colours, namely red, blue and green. Hering also classifies white and black as basic primary colours. He describes his colour wheel as one translating the colours which are naturally perceived by the human eye. Indeed, this is the colour system which had been endorsed as the basis for the NCS system (Natural Colour System). The NCS system is today the international benchmarking system as regards colour combination.

Mauvilac Industries, Hering's Colour Wheel

Harmonious Colours
When two primary colours—either red, blue, green or yellow—are mixed, they produce the secondary colours, i.e. violet, blue-green, orange and lime green. Just go round Hering’s colour wheel and you will notice that adjacent colours are naturally in harmony.

Complementary Colours
On Hering’s colour wheel, colours that are to be found opposite one another are not in harmony. Still, one vibrates with the other. These opposites are the complementary colours—they enhance one another. Making use of complementary colours creates visual dynamism.

Optical Effects
Enlarge: Colours can, by sheer optical effect, apparently enlarge the volume of a room. Enlarging colours are generally pale and cold colours. One can also paint two facing wall panels in a pale colour and the other two in a darker colour. Light up: If you want to bring in more light into a room, paint the ceiling in white or ivory and paint the walls with pale colours. Warm up: To set a cosy mood, paint the ceiling in a warmer colour than that used for the walls. Cover up: To cover up surface imperfections, particularly those of the ceiling, you should choose matt finishing.
